Adult Faith Formation
January - April
The Adult Application Class meets most Sundays (the exception is when there is one service) in the conference room, starting at 9 AM and ending at 9:50 AM. The class is facilitated by Hank Fisher and Steve Lacombe, and we use DVD materials from various church ministers or professors, showing a ten-to-fifteen-minute video followed by group discussion of questions provided by a leader’s guide that accompanies the DVD. Each session is stand-alone, so participants can attend either regularly or drop in as their schedule permits.
The materials for the Winter and Spring sessions are The Bible With and Without Jesus (How Jews and Christians Read the Same Stories Differently) by Amy-Jill Levine (a professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Hartford International University) and Marc Zvi Brettler (Professor of Jewish Studies at Duke University).
We will also study The Message of Jesus by Adam Hamilton (Sr. Pastor of Church of the Resurrection, a United Methodist Church in Leawood, Kansas). This is a six-week study and will coincide with Lent, so we will split the A. J. Levine series into two parts to keep the Lenten study intact.
The approximate curriculum and schedule are as follows:
January 18 – The Creation Account in Genesis (AJ Levine)
January 25 – Adam and Eve (AJ Levine)
February 1 – No class Annual Meeting
February 8 – Isaiah’s Emmanuel Prophecy (AJ Levine)
February 15 – Isaiah’s Suffering Servant (AJ Levine)
Lent
February 22 – The Kingdom of God Has Come Near (Hamilton)
March 1 – The World’s Most Important Sermon (Hamilton)
March 8 – Jesus Spoke to Them in Parables (Hamilton)
March 15 – Who do you say that I am? (Hamilton)
March 22 – Final Words (Hamilton)
March 29 – The Resurrection and the Life (Hamilton)
April 5 – Easter No Class
April 12 – The Book of Jonah (AJ Levine)
April 19 – Jesus’s Words on the Cross Psalm 22 (AJ Levine)
Please feel welcome to attend all sessions or as many as you can. If you have any questions, contact either Hank or Steve.
